im looking into getting my d22 chipped for more power and better economy.
is it this easy to get both? the extra power would be great without buying a d40 but can it seriously give better mpg?
im getting about 28-32mpg on a general run around and about 16-20mpg when towing, and i do a lot of towing.
are there anything to consider when having this done? im having a chip and not a re-map as i want to be able to remove it at will.
has anyone had a negative expiriance after having theirs chipped or are you jumping with joy thinking "why didnt i do this sooner?"
also how does it affect warranties etc?
any help on this would be great.
whilst were on the subject of an increase in power, what about a front mounted intercooler again has anyone had it done?

i wouldnt touch it if i were you, warranty would be out of the window, and id rather treat the truck gently and not expect too much, doing that obviously overrides nissan onboard computer and is designed to be as powerful as possible and also returns best fuel economy, but id be interested in hearing your power/economy gains/losses should you wish to go down this path ;D

Hi J I,ve a report from an engineer to post and will explain why you do not want to increase your power In fact de-tuning prolongs the life of your engine I believe that nissan are not being honest with us all here using daft excuses for rejection Just look at the post above ,using supermarket fuel and towing for example .They are claiming my tyres are worn What has that to do with a conrod doing a runner Watch for post Regards Niall

right, the low down is...ive got another pickup, a isuzu 3.1 on an x which is more of a work car and the nissan is the baby thats washed and polished etc. but with the exception that it still needs to tow and go into muddy fields, amongst other things. so far ive fiddled with the egr valve, made a slight difference (not as smokey). chip is bought waiting to be fitted im just waiting to see what differnce the valve has made. in the near future im planning on putting some 33" or 35" tires with possibly a suspension lift so this will effect gearing and accelleration so a chip maybe neccassery. if the engine does go pop, after reading the other posts and replys and also taking into account my reply regarding a possible warranty claim and ive got to "foot the bill". an accident damaged nissan frontier will be on its way to me from america, whip the engine and possibly the box out of that, put a super charger to that engine, put it in mine with a lpg conversion.
or if all goes well someone might buy it and i can have my wicked way with a td5 defender instead! ive even got some 15x10 compomotives before the car!

hi all. the chip has been fitted for a while now and what can i say. (i havnt been driving that much because of ill health but hear it goes)
power;- ive got to take into account that ive also got a performance stainless exhaust but ive got to say WOW. about a week ago i got a bit silly by trying to race a D40 from a set of lights (on a dual carriageway, at about 3am, in the middle of nowhere might i add). he didnt stand a chance! at the next set he ask me if it was a v6 (or somat!?) and if i wanted to sell it?!
towing;- fantastic towing my caravan isnt a chore any more. i bareley change gear and its dead easy to overtake lorrys/hgvs when needed.
economy;- ive been getting roughly a 10-15% increase whilst driving solo or towing.
overall;- it seems to be running smoother and quieter whether at idle or 70mph. (i was sat talking to a friend, who also a d22 with 23k on the clock, drivers door to drivers door and didnt realise mine was running until he turned his off!) the egr valve is also back as it should be. i cruise around towns in 5th gear at about 28mph and you can pull away easily without changing up. it doesnt smoke as much as what i expected. the larger tyres or suspension lift didnt go ahead as i was told this will make the truck more top-heavy and more difficult to manouver around corners at higher speeds and to make emergancy manouvers when needed. not my cup of tea. i change gear approx a 3rd less than before as you just put your foot down a little more when needed.
so in short im happy with it

Which chip did you use and how much? Did you fit it yourself and ifso, is it easy to fit?

havnt been here in a while and eventually sold the truck to a mate who was in a crash in his navara rally raid, but here goes,
got the front mounted intercooler fitted. HUGE power increase but at the expense of a quite a bit of turbo lag. had the turbo "turned up" to compensate but hadnt stopped the lag completly.
replacement panel air filter, kept the original air box as under bonnet temps would actually increase the air intake tempreture.
i didnt get it on a rolling road but im guessing it was pushing over 200bhp and ?lb/ft. engine tempreture was normal even when driving the truck hard or towing heavy loads.
it did sound a bit loud & lairy though.
bought a used gearbox and had a higher final drive fitted (£700), removed it though after it whined like a pig (must have been knackered!). so the old box was refitted.
when i sold the truck it had 56k miles and was running lovely
