Hi All, half way through a long motorway journey, a loud ticking noise developed from the engine. It sounded to me like it was one of the hydraulic cam followers. After a careful drive home and the top off the engine I decided that I better have a deeper look. After removing the pistons and con rods , there was'nt any play in the little ends but each shell bearing on the big ends were badly pitted, the bores also seem worn with a 'step' at the top where the piston rings stop. My question is, is it the big ends that were causes the ticking sound or was it the piston rings rattling at the top of there stroke. Or something else? The crankshaft is still in situ, does anyone recommend I remove it to replace the shell bearings or are they not the problem. I've had this D22 from new and changed the oil approx every 4000 miles , its now done 59,000 miles and 5 years old, can't believe the wear in the engine, I wanted to keep this truck for 10 years, not now though. I'd appreciate any advice on this one .

Sounds familiar to me. my engine developed same ticking noise and thought it was an injector or top end. Conrod was split but still connected. It had spewed the the bearing up through the split but remained connected to the crank. had to replace 1 conrod plus had bent the crank so new one of those too with all new bearings.
