The fault on my 2006 D40 auto is "sudden power loss" which is manageable solo but impossible to live with whilst towing or loaded up. Here's what happens: accelerate at ¾ throttle or more, then at around 3-3500 rpm the power suddenly disappears and the vehicle slows down. Not a total power loss but at full throttle the max speed is a mere 20 mph! At first, I thought I had run out of deisel. The only way to rectify the situation is to switch off for a few seconds and then re-start, which is easier said than done with an auto box and whilst overtaking in lane 2 of the motorway, with a 1½ tonne caravan hanging off the tow bar! This is a well known issue now with this make and model.......but the dealers and maker will not publicly admit to it at all. This situation is most unacceptable and unsatisfactory for a vehicle that is barely 18 months old. I have written to Nissan but I'm not holding my breath for an answer. Only after getting the service manager of a major dealership outside in the car park, would he finally but privately admit it and told me the problem is a widespread one, albeit the newer models have had the fault engineered out........ allegedly. I have heard that loads of people are suffering from the same problem and it's difficult getting the fault repaired at all by the dealers, which all seem to be in denial with this issue. When they do take it in, the repair takes an age. This is because Nissan will not authorise the fitting of new parts. Instead, the authorised remedy is to remove the fuel pump and rails, pack them into a special box, send them off to the authorised vendors' repair centre, they then do their stuff on it, send it back to the dealer again in the special box and the dealer then refits the overhauled parts. What a faff about. Time wise, this means the vehicle is "VOR" for up to 3 weeks. 2 weeks could be wiped off of this IF the maker supplied replacement components, straight away! It's all very frustrating and most inconvenient for both the dealer and the vehicle owner. In the meantime, the saga continues.............

I phoned the service manager at the main dealer's this morning and more bad news. The fuel pump hasn't yet come back from the overhaulers which is not good news..........AND now there is another fault they have found. One of the timing gears has a broken tooth and the timing has slipped slightly. The mechanics are taking the cylinder head off to check for damage. Makes me wonder...... what the hell have "they" done to it ?? .....we are NOT amused as this saga continues...........

I am not happy. Just phoned the dealer for a progress report and they are "awaiting authorisation" for the actual repair!!!!!! This is totally unacceptable. They are now going to try to hurry things up - should have done that already - me thinks. I then phoned Nissan UK after sales (after the umpteenth attempt at trying to speak to the right department with Nissan) and they were just as useless. Apparently, their "system" is down, whatever that means, and they can't answer the question. They manually wrote down my complaint and will log it when the "system" is back up and running. I will keep you all posted. This saga is set to run and run.......... "You can, can with a Nissan"........ Don't make me laugh!

Surprise, surprise, but true to their word, Nissan UK Customer Care got back to me with a case number and they are now going to look up my case, find out what's happening and contact the dealer.
I am feeling a little bit better now that someone is actually listening to me and on my case, at last.
Why is our world built on the fact that who ever shouts loudest, get's the fastest action. It's all wrong.
Anyway, I will keep you all posted.
...........Whilst typing this, Nissan UK called me again. Bad News.....Very bad news. My engine is now knackered! The camshaft, valves and piston are all shot, because of the timing gear failure. Add that to the fuel pump and fuel rails rebuild. Apparently, they are now considering a brand new engine and are awaiting authorisatiopn, subject to further diagnosis. I now need to speak to the dealer. The plot thickens...................
I will keep you all posted.

Well, here we go again. My Navara is knackered again! Booked into the dealer for tomorrow as it is suffering from sudden power loss under acceleration, yet again. This was the reason the bl00dy thing went in, in the first place, before the engine blew up! I informed my contact at Nissan Customer Services and she aint happy, hence why it's getting seen to, on the quick. Yet another period of courtesy car driving for me. So no chance of getting away in the 'van as none of their motors come with tow bars anymore! Needless to say. I aint happy. I'm missing all the best of the UK weather, for this caravanning season!

I collected my Navara today from the dealers, after the latest round of repairs and mechanically it seems sound. Just hope that this latest fuel rail replacement IS the end of my engine troubles and woes!
However, they have managed to miss one of the paint scratches on the bonnet (dealer damage whilst replacing engine), so it has to go in again, next Wednesday to be done, this time, to be repaired while I wait, hopefully.
So, now the engine has been properly run in for the first 1000 miles without towing, we are now already to go caravanning again at the weekend. The hills and vales of the M11 should be a decent and thorough test for the new replacement engine, reburbished injector pump and new set of replacement fuel rails, under load from the 1472 kgs. laden weight caravan, that will be hanging off the back of my Navara, for the 152 mile 'round trip.
Fingers crossed..................
P.S. I met up with Angie Matthews from Nissan Customer Services at the Excel Motor Show last Thursday, which proved quite useful and it was good to have a chat and put "a face to the voice". Thanks again Angie for all your help and support. It is indeed very much appreciated.

Hi LS Ask Nissan if your engine was de-tuned Regards Niall

Now you come to mention it, I'm fairly certain it has been de-tuned.
During testing the vehicle today, the thought did occur to me that it did not seem to accelerate as quickly as it could before my troubles, but I thought it must be my imagination or something.
I'll certainly ask the question, but I bet I already know the dealer's answer.
...........I remain cynical.

If it has been de-tuned ,there seems to me to be a breach of contract .The power has been decreased and your fuel consumption will increase. You,re not getting what you paid for.I,m talking to a lawyer about this Dave from Billcar engineering put me on to an engineer who publishes a Mag and gives to rebuilders who has studied the failure and has come up with a reason for it I sent Bjorn Churchill and Angie Matthews a copy or it on Monday 4thAug Mike Booth has his own website www.the-engine-rebuilder.co.uk and I spoke to him at great length on sunday last.he hhas aggreed to advise me if I go to court with nissan.I sent Nik a copy and if you want one send me your e-mail I,m at weenib@hotmail.com

Here we go again.
Even MORE problems:
Energy Management Warning Light ON. Emissions Warning Light ON. Vehicle coughs and splutters under acceleration. Oil leaks from the new engine. Bonnet paint scratches still to be repaired.
It's booked to go back into the Nissan dealer on Wednesday. Looks like they will have a busy day on it....... AGAIN !
