report from car engines ltd of southall is as follows.
With regard to your request for a diagnosis of your old engine, we wish to state as follows: it is not possible to give a definitive cause when an engine has failed so dramatically breaking a con-rod and punching a hole through the block. However it is our experience that this is a common failure on this make and model of vehicle.
In the past 6 months we have had 5 vehicles of this model that were brought in with the engine in a similar condition. We can only assume that this is a design fault inherent in the engine.
i rest my case your honour!!!! come on nissan cough up now, you are losing sale after sale cheaper just to honour your past loyal customers who have handed over their hard earned cash for a reliable vehicle!.

well i went to see nissan!! ha ha and they werent very sympathetic. said it would be £1200 just to strip it down and have a look find where this tapping comes from. i think its cam gear maybe needs shims.. didnt fancy that two of the mechanics know that these engines have faults but will not say anything! they advised me bolts and end bearings are to blame and sometimes the con rods themselves? on most due to inadequate materials used? so ive now got the engine out and im starting a new rebuild as i had no hope with any kind of warranty. i will take pictures as i go. i am a fairly competent mechanic and so will do my best to write down what i find. im using all nissan parts apart from shells and bolts. dont expect to be fully rebuilding a japanese diesel engine at 82000 miles!! i bought it for reliability and im finding its a bit of an anchor round my neck!! any other info on these engine would be much appreciated if anyone knows anything abot them. im happy for my car to be almost a case study for some kind of compensation with nissan maybe as we all have to claim not only for the car but loss of use of it... oh well back to the garage!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i dont know how to do it so can you post this on the public board please!!!!

At the end of the day your vehicle may still clock up many thousands of miles before any catastrophic failure, it may never happen, but im my case it happened at 77,000 miles without warning, my vehicle is now subject to nissan warranty claim, so really you either have to do some remedial work to ensure a long life or indeed sell it before the fateful day, but join us (only costs a £1) and im happy to furnish you with everything i know and more in depth information

Hi all, I'm your latest unlucky recruit. 54 (feb 05) D22, 95000mls rod through side of engine. Nissan quoted £6500+vat for repair. That price pretty much writes the vehicle off as far as I'm concerned. It was regularly serviced to 42000 but then due to the crap 6000mls intervals I pushed it out to every 10000mls. Don't see why this should send a con rod through the side though but think Nissan will use it against me in any claim. As much as I'd like Nissan to pick up the repair I dont have the time to wait while we argue the case so does anyone know the best place to source a fresh engine at a decent price or am I buying another vehicle (obviously not Nissan)? One more thing, maybe I'm being thick but while I see you would like us all to pay a quid or two I don't see how or where to pay it. Maybe you'd be a little richer if you made this more obvious?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention in previous post, when I spoke to my local dealer he said he already had 2 vehicles waiting with the same problem and 3 more in Derby. Given the relatively low sales volume (compared to say a fiesta or whatever) that number waiting with the same fault (if calculated nationwide) would surely prove a design fault wouldn't it?? The ones I saw waiting belonged to Balfour Beatty who drive hundreds of these nationwide. Get them involved and you may have all the funding you ever dreamed of

Hi Bleubird welcome to the site .Firstly there is a donation box on the hompage We do not make any profit from this site .All money given is used for the site maintenance and phone calls between members and admin Do not give up on Nissan ,contact them straight away and start negotiating No amount of servicing will stop this conrod issue Some of our members have been given new engines, free of charge and I am awaiting an inspection tomorrow 19thjune Whatever engine you source and buy has the same fault and will blow up sooner or later I,m in the same position as you ,with a replacement and I,m waiting on it to blow up,just like the last one There is no doubt now that the engines have a weakness and Nissan would be hard pressed to argue that point regardless of sevice intervals You did very well to get the mileage you did I have a relative who works for BB and will contact him today Regards Niall

Well, I thought this day would never come. Today in the post I received a cheque from Nissan for the full amount of our replacement reconditioned engine, towing costs, tax & insurance of replacement vehicle and small amount of lost earnings. They also sent a box of chocolates. I am extremely relieved as you can all imagine. It will make a big difference to our business having the cash back. The lady we dealt with (eventually) at Nissan, Maria White, was very nice and helpful - wish we had access to her from the start. I feel that the settlement has been fair and so for that I thank Nissan. However, the 2 month delay and effort required to resolve this will leave a lasting bad memory for some time to come. Also, the dealership threatening to charge storage should be an issue that they address as it added insult to injury. Everyone who has had these engine problems must believe that they can get a resolution, no matter how many times they have been told no. Stick with it, it's worth it.

Congrats on the success, it gives the rest of us hope. My truck has been off the road since November last year and was the only vehicle for my carpentry business, I have been scratching my head since then trying to figure out whether to, and how I would find the cash to replace the engine with one that would do the same thing down the line. Your case of taking Nissan for loss of earnings is encouraging as I have lost at least and hour and a half a day since the breakdown due to having to drop the rest of the clan where they need to be in the Mrs' car before I get to work. How did you go about approaching them for the extra amount for loss of earnings? Josh
