Hi All I have a 2006 pathfinder diesel. When its cold, there is a noticeable rattle from the engine. It sounds like pinking or piston slap. There seems to be a tappet or bearing knocking too. If I accelerate hard it gets quieter. It gets quiet when the engine warms up. I brought it to the supplier. He said that it is a known issue but that it is normal. He says that it is because the air temperature is low and it will not be there when the weather warms up. The warranty runs out in three weeks. Is he telling the truth? Any feedback would be great.

Try pouring water over the fanbelts and then starting the engine. If it is quiet then replace the fanbelts. I had the same problem with my navara. Took it back to nissan twice but they said they could find nothing wrong. The noise got so bad people were stopping my wife telling her the engine was going to blow up. Tried the water over the fanbelts and it worked for a short period until the water dried I suppose. Got the fanbelts changed and it has been quiet ever since.

Hi all, Just joined today, i had the same knocking problem with my D40 when running from cold, but i picked it up from my mates house today and it was VERY bad, sounded like something was a lot slacker in the engine. I am going to try the water on the belts thing and see if that works, i will be supprised if it does because it sounds so bad now. I have just been looking and not many people have wrote about nackered engines in D40's more wrote about D22's, unless i'm looking in the wrong place. has anyone else had major engine failier with a D40, i'm very worried as i use it for work (i'm a builder) will contact local dealer tomorrow and keep posted.

Sounds like a cold start issue, Solinoid on fuel pump or fuel pump itself. It can make a dieles car sound like a tractor. If it still does it when hot it could be the fuel pump.
