Hi Folks, Im new on here so go easy on me!! Problem is i split a pipe by the fuel filter the other night when out lamping on a local estate,i cut the pipe shorter and put it back on and put about quarter of a tank of diesel(not the normal colour) from the tank on site to get me home. It ran fine for a couple of days but now loses power on acceleration and chucks clouds of black smoke from the exhaust,if you let it tick over then give it some revs it seems to clear itself for a couple of days then the gremlins strike again, its a 2002 crew cab and has given me no probs over the past 6 months, have i just sucked up some crud from the farm tank or is it something more sinister???..ive noticed a bit of oil round the pipe between the turbo and air intake beneath the air scoop. Any info greatly welcomed.

Hi deerhunter. Welcome to our site .I,ve had to repair my 2 diesel injector pumps.I was told that the problem was a pressure valve and cost 400 plus pounds each time The last time it was in,3 months ago in Lavas in Stornoway there was an X-trail with a problem with injector pump which was replaced under guarantee.I,ve heard of other navaras with a similiar sounding problem You may have picked up some junk from a farm tank or possibly water Red diesel is the same as white with a azo benzine dye in it called solution dye 164. Google it and you will see Try putting a diesel additive in and see if it clears The pump that I have in my D22 , I have been told ,is susceptible to any contamination in the fuel,so try a new filter ,additive and if that doesn,t work ,take it to diesel specialist.Regards Niall PS what,s your mileage?

Thanks for that Mr Scott..the mileage is around the 75,000 mark..ive been out tonight and banged a bottle of STP injector cleaner in the tank so will see if that makes any odds..the thing that gets me is the amount of soot and smoke that comes out the back..the only time ive seen smoke like that was on a renault 5 turbo i had when the oil seals on the turbo went and leaked oil into the exhaust but it was a grey/white smoke and not black. I wish i had found this site before id bought the truck!..in saying that though ive had 6 months trouble free, its pretty economical, comfy and goes anywhere off road with a good set of mud diggers so if i sort this im hoping to hang on to it. Did you replace the pump yourself or did you have it rebuilt and what was the cost?? thanks.

Thanks...ive spoke to a guy who has a fuel pump for sale because he has just had a secondhand one rebuilt by bosch at a cost of over £600 but when fitted back into his truck the problem was still there...no acceleration and black smoke everywhere...turned out to be a central gearbox something or other that cost £28!!!....gutted...but im sure i'll not be as lucky!. It cleared on the way home today and ran fine for about 15-20 miles home but think i'll take the bike for the rest of the week!!
