I've a 05 D22 purchased from new and I've had it serviced by a Nissan main dealer at every 6000 miles. At no stage did the garage comment on anything abnormal either about my engine or any 'generic weakness' in it.
after 66000 miles and 2 years what started like a loud tappet noise progressed to a lumpy solid metallic noise. After the garage tightened the belts and sent me on my way (it's a work vehicle which I need daily including emergency 24 hr cover - I'm a vet) it got worse within 5 miles and I ground to a halt.
No 4 bearing collapsed. I had also purchased an extended warranty when I got the car new, so breathed a sigh of relief and thought I was covered. Warranty people finally came and inspected the car and said " We don't cover cases of Manufacturing Fault".
To give them dues - Nissan finally replaced the engine, turbo etc etc free of charge. It did however take at least 5 weeks doing so (cost and inconvenience to me and my business).
On picking up the truck I was told by the Main Dealers that the new engine was exactly the same as the old one and did not come with ANY warranty as it was a 'good will gesture' by Nissan replacing it.
Having looked at this website I contacted Nissan Customer Services again last week. I have still maintained a main dealer service record with this new engine - and Nissan agreed that this replacement engine will have a 5 yr / 92K miles warranty on it if I keep up the servicing. (I did make a point of getting a reference number !!)
SO........ I guess I am one of the early lucky ones - a replacement engine FOC, and now it seems that it does have a warranty on it. What isn't clear is when I should go ahead and replace the bearings (presumably at 92001 miles !!) - and why it seems I am fortunate whereas so many of you haven't been. Nissan does need sort everyone out - not just those who know how to complain loudly and threaten further action.
My 2 pence worth !!
